Meandering Friday

Well, m3ip sites were down for longer than they should’ve been. I’m sure tens of folks were saddened, but all is once more right with the world, or at least certain corners of it.

What’s up, Iowa? You were doing so well! You had joined West Virginia on the list of States I Will No Longer Mock. SIWNLM is a tough list to get on; it’s like a reverse no-fly list. Seriously, Iowa, you may want to reconsider.

I had a semi-productive day (given that it was Friday, I am tempted to classify it as productive). My goofing off was primarily of the non-productive variety. In addition to my now-standard daily dose of Savage Love, I followed the Boing Boing and Making Light discussions of the latest SFWA kerfuffle. Since I do not come close to qualifying for membership, there’s a degree of schadenfreude involved in my interest. Never underestimate the combined power of schadenfreude and boredom.

Go Iowa!

It’s very easy to make fun of Iowa. It’s flat and full of corn and so rectangular.

But I spent a short amount of time in Iowa (a side effect of a business trip to Nebraska and South Dakota). And you know what? It wasn’t nearly as flat as Nebraska. Now we also know it’s not filled with douchebags.

Hey! I met another writing goal!

Most. Terrifying. Dalek. Ever.

The latest (and possibly last) issue of GrendelSong includes a short nonfiction piece by E. Sedia, “Contraception Throughout the Ages.” It isn’t particularly useful for world-building—it’s just not long enough to serve as a resource, as the author is well aware. But some of the comments on word choice did get me thinking (though I’m only getting around to writing about it now):

The British and somewhat old-fashioned quality of this word [bugger] makes it attractive for many fantasy writers, but I submit that it is not quite appropriate—the origin of the word lies in Bulgaria, where the Manichean heresy was quite widespread…the origin of the word largely precludes it from being present in any world but the one we live in—unless one sets out to have Bulgaria populated by heretics in his or her made up universe.
